As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season approaches the halfway stage, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s inability to repeat its 2024 heroics has been among the biggest talking points so far.
One of the major reasons for the Sunrisers languishing at the bottom of the points table is its inability to win away from home. In fact, the Sunrisers remains the only team to have failed to win away from home.
Head coach Daniel Vettori admitted that it has been unable to adapt to different conditions.
“There has to be more to it from our side that we have to adapt. We know that conditions like this exist in Chennai, sometimes (in) Ahmedabad. We are not expecting to go around the country and come up on belters, so the ball is in our court to realise that,” Vettori said after the team’s loss at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night.

The pitch at the Wankhede was in contrast to the belter it usually produces, with a tacky surface witnessing the ball sticking to the surface. Add to it the prowess of the MI pacers in varying pace without missing the length, with Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult leading from the front, and the Sunrisers’ power-packed batting line-up could hardly break the shackles.
Should Vettori expect such slow surfaces that restrict Sunrisers’ big-hitters?
“No one really has control over their surface, so there is a little bit of luck involved in terms of coming up against wickets that don’t suit us,” Vettori said.
